Got any tutorial/article requests?

Post by Delirium »

JE gave me an Idea from his post in my other thread on -radbump.

If you want any tutorial/article requests please post them. I'm going to write a bunch over the next few weeks while I'm not mapping.

Btw I've done the layout one, I'm just perfecting it ^-^

Brushwork - tips, shorcuts and techniques
Compiler options - like the dirt options and all the other stuff that's not really well known
Ways to light a map

I could probably suggest more.

Maybe i can give you few tips on that one.
First of all lose the shape recognition. It determines the shape same way a height map does. Black is low, white is high.
However a texture rarely follows that rule. Simplest example is a stone floor texture i have that is made out of black and yellow stones. Of course shape recognition messed up the _n map completely and decided that black stones are actually flat.

I never use very large and very fine details settings. Those 2 only add distortions. Medium details is the most important one for most textures.
Don't go overboard with intensity. Higher isn't always better, if you go too high the crevices will have too much depth and look bad.
Stay bellow 50, way bellow 50 for any metal texture.
Keep in mind that CB displays specular in a completely different way than UrT does so don't rely too much on the 3D preview option.

I wanna know how to fix this:

shot0029.jpg

It's a jump map, i don't want people to see that other part of the map by those windows, especially because it is caulked...
What can i do?
[12:25] <JohnnyEnglish> morning Nounou
[12:25] <JohnnyEnglish> wotcha doing?
[12:25] <Nounou> hello
[12:26] <Nounou> nothing much, i've nothing to do at work so

Thanks for your suggestions, You should hint your map properly or try remove those glass windows and put them in a position where you can't see another side of the map

I've tried hinting and it didn't work...
DagF told me about a technique, like making the skybox brush detailed, surrounded by structural brushes and then create a hollow box below the map with _skybox entity inside of it and texture it with the skybox thing..
Didn't work for me though :(

@Delirium:
Teach us how to do those "light (beams?)" that come out of lamps, like if you see the light...
[12:25] <JohnnyEnglish> morning Nounou
