Layout help

Post by DagF »

Hey

I have just worked on jump maps and box maps the entire time i've mapped.
I think i need to get started on a frag map that could be used as i think it's relly fun to make maps, but dont want to releas something that i dont find good enough. And box maps is not good enough.

I got a layout idea, more or less based on a real layout.
If anyone could have a look and tell me what they think, what i should change or anything else. I would be very happy :)

This is my layout idea:

This is what i want to make:
http://maps.google.com/maps?q=fredrikstad&hl=no&ie=UTF8&ll=59.213034,10.935556&spn=0.002326,0.008256&sll=37.0625,-95.677068&sspn=58.076329,135.263672&vpsrc=6&hnear=Fredrikstad,+%C3%98stfold,+Norge&t=m&z=18&layer=c&cbll=59.213034,10.935556&panoid=z3gsHpHcyRKZJuf_YDMInA&cbp=12,69.57,,0,0

If you have some links to layout tuto's id be pleased as well. I have read bens bible but i think i could need more practical examples.

I dont really get what the green and blue mean....
But walls shouldnt be all straight and flat...
You should also have high ground and low ground levels, like the balconies on Casa and the underbridges...
(Or window and upper metro/lamps in TP)

Sorry, i forgot to tell what i meant.

The green are the paths, the blue are open areas.
The walls will not be all stright. I used 2 min drwaing up the layout in radiant(To show what i'm thinking).
I would like to recreate a smal part of the city, see the google maps link.

Ok, I see thinglay. Also, I see You are following Ben's method, right? Ben has nice way of thinking - he uses straight lines and colors. Start about thinking which enviroment will every line represent. Wharehouses are typical CQB areas. You might think about backyards and so on.

Also:

My 2 cents.

What i have done here is basicly drawn over the streets as they are irl.
I will not make cqb areas and so as in urt snipers can be used in cqb and so on.
It will be possible to run trough some buildings and go up in some windows i think.

I will try and change the layout some tonight, im open to ideas. I will try to avoid the long fps/ snper hell part by tilting the areas a bit from eatch other.

I would like to recreate a part of my city as i'm not to good in making up stuff.

Remember, that what works for reality and city architecture, does not always work for video games.
