Control, you can control exactly what amount of light you want, color, distance from a surface.
with minlight you have same lighting everywhere, and often you come across of places where minlight is either too strong or too weak. Additionally minlight causes some weird effects on bump mapped surfaces, mainly it tends to diminish the effect of smoothing groups.

Ok, I am waiting for it. I will use it in my competition map. I will get Linux, Mac and Windows urt players to test it to ensure it works fine.

I corrected the q3map2 one, it seems to work fine on azurea, still need to do a wiki entry, but in the meantime if one of you has something we can test one and some time, we can do that over the weekend.
