Map making competition for beginners - Idea

Post by DagF »

We would like to create a map competition just for beginners.
For those who have made a few small alpha maps and for those who have been thinking about starting to make maps.

The intention behind this is to recruit more mappers aswell as updating resources so there is a place to go and learn how to make maps.

The targeted version of the game will be Urban Terror 4.2.

The mappers will have a list of things to include in their map such as skybox, water and so on.
Making them have to explore much of what mapping for urban terror is like.

We will promote the irc channel as a good place to get help, along with the forum and the wiki.

We want to get the wiki updated a bit and make a nice page contaning basic info linking to the other wikipages, giving the links on the main page contest.

We would need mappers who can help update the wiki and mappers to join the comp.
If you have a comment or would like to join the wiki group or the comp reply to this post.

To map for what. An ancient engine? Look at the game, there's hardly any new players, and if old ones wanted to learn to map they would by now.
If FS team isn't hoping to recruit new mappers or even supporting them properly, why should you.

3;rd party developers have never been listened to or even wanted for that matter, you guys are wasting your time.
It's time to move on, and explore other engines. This place is called custom map makers, not custom UrT map makers.
Expand your horizons, cryengine, unreal engine, source, unity, there's a lot of better and properly supported development kits and engines out there.
Get Del back, split the site up into forums, shove this UrT antique into it's own sub section and add new ones for other engines.
Trust me, moving to another engine is easier than it seems, source engine has hundreds of tutorials and there's a lot of skilled people that work with it who are willing to help.
Get Del to get in touch with Gavin, he can try to get you guys to develop for Overdose.

How can you even compare this pile of boring rubbish:

With this custom map for CS:GO

I map because I like this game, not Crysis, not CS, but UrT; I'm sure the other engines are eons ahead but I don't care about what they can offer to me
UrT is the only game that has been able to keep me playing for years, without ever getting tired, so no matter how old the engine is or how much I hate radiant and its limits, I'll only stop mapping the day I won't enjoy my bad looking works anymore
..My 2 cents
