Sugestions for competitions

Post by pickles »

I would like to see more mapping competitions and have a few ideas, but I would like to know what kind of competitions you think you would enjoy participating in. I know some people dont have the time/inclination to make a whole map, and for others their talents lie in different areas of mapping.

All suggestions will be greatly appreciated :D

A mapping competition for "Functionality", where mappers for example could build a mall, and they'd have to think wisely about the mall layout, where they'd put stairs, elevators, etc..

I will say that Happys idea is a really god idea.

His idea is to make something the community can use after the contest. So textures, map prefabs, models, sounds.

This is all part of making a map. And this will give the community something instead of just a rushed map.

If we could have some of this and some of that I would be happy :)

+1 prefabs
(as I really like the houses and the fence by Rayne / jonny)
- but it might be better to wait some time... or maybe waiting for the ftwgl contest on layout?
also the most ppl are not 100%in for mappin atm... I think - as I am not :P

Idk about this just got the idea in my head while reading this(Especally"I know some people dont have the time/inclination to make a whole map")

Here it is:
Lets say Some one who is not entering the competition make an extremely simple layout,(no models, no textures, just flat walls)
and from that layout we have to see who can make the best looking map acording to that layout. :)
And ofc you can make an little bit different layout but u cant build outside or remove any of the allready putted walls.

Why?
1.Since no one had time to think of an layout/build an whole map, we now already have one, its just to continue on it.
2.Admit it would be pretty cool to see how different the maps are from eachoter when the layout is so "close".
3.Why not?

That is exactly what I was thinking :D

My other idea is of a kind of museum, where you get a theme and you create a room using models and textures which would then join on to the other maps and create a map (museum) from which people can view and judge the entries.

the idea with the museum is GREAT, :D
but then i think you can do what ever u want and not a special theme, so that the Final map is real museum, not a hall with 1.000 rooms looking same, but one in green and one in red :P, and that u only can use 4-6 models and 10-20 textures, cause if u can use allot of everything, everybody can create a good and cool looking room. AND the rooms had to keep lightsafed, so that in the room u can use all lighttricks and u dont destroy the lighting of the other rooms.
for a big tree, you need a small axe.
