What is the best way to show arcing electricity as a special effect?

Maps in release candidate: Blockforts, Cannons 1, Hotzone, Icecastle

scrolling shader would be easier, or use NulL's particle studio

When I have tried that, it slows my framerate to a crawl. I don't really know how to work with it yet though; maybe I am doing something wrong.
